How do the classes work?

  • Attend a four-hour class once a week, working at your own pace.

  • Each class has up to five students with their own workbench each, lead by an instructor.

  • Morning and evening classes available, including two speciality solid body electric classes.

  • There are no fixed start or end dates - you can start whenever there is a spot available.

We offer flexible learning

Attend a four hour class each week. There are no start or end dates - work at your own pace on your own project. There is a maximum of five students per class, so you get plenty of personal attention from your teacher, who is a professional guitar maker. And, you can book extra classes if there is a bench available.

We support you all the way

We guarantee that as long as you remain committed, you will achieve your goal of crafting your own guitar. Receive expert guidance by some of Australia's top makers. And there's plenty to learn from your fellow students, who will be working on different guitars at different stages of the process.

The process of guitar building

These are the general steps for crafting your guitar, from start to finish. Although, as you'll see in the fantastic video below from one of our students, the process is not always linear and will depend on the type of guitar you choose to make.

Making the box

Assembling the box

Making the neck

Fitting and carving

Prepping for finish

Applying finish

Final assembly

How much does
it cost?

This depends on what you build and the materials you use. People also work at different speeds. See a guide to model costs at What we build.

What if I have no experience?

No experience with guitars or woodwork is necessary. We have helped many people with nil experience of either to build all styles of guitars.

How long will
it take?

Times vary however a Little Wing travel guitar takes around 12 weeks while full-sized acoustic generally take around eight months.

Frequently asked questions

  • This will depend on the:

    • type of guitar you make

    • materials you choose

    • time it takes to finish

There is an enrolment fee of $220, payable before you start. Each class costs $121 and there is a one-off consumables fee of $65 per project.

We offer pay-as-you-go, installments, and fixed-price full payment.

You can also choose from our Select Series, with design and materials pre-selected and including the enrollment and consumable fees.

For a detailed cost breakdown, see what we build.

  • No wood working experience is required.

We have helped many people who have never picked up a hammer or chisel and don’t know the first thing about woodworking to build all styles of guitars. You don’t need to know woodworking to make a guitar with us, you just need to have the passion to try. We will step you through the process.

No ability to play the guitar is required.

Many of our students have made their first guitar which they made intending to learn on. Other students are building guitars for others, such as children and grandchildren.

  • You can purchase class credits and book your class via our online booking system. If you've paid in full or by installment, we'll pre-load the credits into the system.

Want to take an extra or make-up class? Use the online booking system to check which classes have free benches and book your spot.

  • You can source materials from suppliers locally or via the internet. We heartily recommend Guitar Templates as a reputable supplier. Located in the same building as the Brisbane Guitar Making School, Guitar Templates offers discounts and easy pick-up, and can usually turn around orders within 24 hours.

For simplicity, our list provided to enrolled students parts list links straight through to Guitar Templates ordering form. Want something extra? Contact Guitar Templates.

  • We offer weekly classes 4 hours in duration with a choice of morning and evening times. Students generally come once a week to the same class. There is always an interesting mix of guitars underway at various stages of the build.

We also offer a limited number of casual classes for those who can’t make it to a regular weekly class.

The time taken depends on several factors. Everyone works at their own pace on the guitar they choose to make. So your skills and capability play a role along with the complexity of the guitar you choose to make. You will have the support of experienced instructors to achieve your build.

You can compare approximate build time across different type of guitar builds at What we build.

  • There really is no “best” wood for making a guitar, but there are a large range of great woods with a multitude of characteristics that will suit different guitars differently. Our preferred supplier offers a range of excellent woods sourced predominantly from Australia. For a first guitar, we recommend using good quality tone wood that has been selected for guitar making. This wood will be quatersawn, well seasoned, dimensioned well and categrorised with most obvious faults already culled. The variation in sound comes from not only the timber but the build process and of course the style of guitar. Without reference to other factors and focusing solely on the timber, the vast majority of the sound is predominantly the soundboard. This however is of little effect compared to the type of guitar and build style.

  • The short answer is “lots of help”. The school and your instructor will support you the whole way through the process and you can trust in our guarantee that as long as you work towards the end goal we will ensure you succeed. Each class has between three to five students with a minimum of one instructor per session who circulates around the class frequently. Our instructors are very good at managing the class workflow and ensuring each student has tasks while they are occupied with demonstrating or instructing. As there are many different parts to a guitar build you will often find everyone working on different sections of their guitar and therefore the instructor can support each person individually. There is very little idle time in a class and when there is, it is also an opportunity for observational learning, especially for upcoming processes. Students are also very welcome to observe the instruction given to fellow classmates.

  • The Brisbane Guitar Making School is located on the south side of Brisbane just off the Centenary Highway. Our physical address is Unit 5, 101 Jijaw St, Sumner Park Brisbane, 4074. See map.
